An escape attempt by a Mt Eden Prison inmate was foiled on Saturday when officers pulled him from the four metre-high prison wall.
"The prisoner tried to jump over an internal wall, the wall is about 4 metres high and topped with razor wire," Corrections assistant regional manager Grace Smit said.
"If he had succeeded he would have then been trapped between the internal wall and the outer perimeter wall which would have made it harder for us to get him out."
Smit said the escape did not appear to have been planned, rather it was a spontaneous effort.
"The prisoner will now face internal charges and possible police charges."
