The Auckland City Mission's annual appeal is struggling.
Spokesman James Holt says they rely on the money raised to cater for the increasing demand from people needing their help.
He says there's been a 52% increase in the number of people seeking assistance and there's no doubt the recession has had an impact.
Holt says there's obviously goodwill out there, but people are struggling to give as much as in past years which is a worry for them.
He says so far they are 20,000 short of the funds raised last year.
