Two Auckland schools have teamed up to take out the grand prize in the Big Sing choir competition.
Eighteen choirs competed in the secondary schools choral event in Wellington, all hoping to hit the right notes with the judges.
Judge Paul Holley said he was amazed by the repertoires of the choirs.
"The sound they make, it's just really been eye-opening for me - it's been fantastic," he told ONE News last night.
It was the combined sounds of two North Shore high schools that wowed the judges the most. Choralation is a choir of singers from Westlake Boys and sister high school Westlake Girls.
The group took away the coveted Platinum Gold Award.
Two other choirs had won gold alongside Choralation - Bel Canto from Burnside High and Craighead Chorale from Craighead Diocesan School - but the Auckland group was then awarded the supreme Platinum Gold award.
That award is for the choir that, in the opinion of the judges, demonstrated consistent excellence throughout every piece in their repertoire. It is the the third year in a row that Choralation has won the Platinum award - a feat no other choir has ever achieved.
"Their sound was just so unified and so together they communicated so well with us, they communicated the meaning of the music," Holley said.
Westlake Boys also won silver for their Voicemale choir.
The awards were announced at the end of the Gala Concert for The Big Sing Finale in Wellington.
