Thousands of Aucklanders turned out for the re-opening of the city's art gallery today.
Closing its doors to the public three years ago, the gallery has been officially reinstated to its original location on the corner of Kitchener St and Wellesley St.
The $120 million makeover has increased the gallery space by 50%, allowing 15,000 works that include paintings by Dali and Matisse to go on display.
The renovations also include a cafe, gallery shop, and an auditorium.
"I want Aucklanders to take pride in this new public building and to engage in everything the new gallery building has to offer," said Regional Facilities Auckland Chairman Sir Don McKinnon.
"We've waited three years while this complex development has
taken place, and now the wait is finally over."
Among the gallery's opening exhibitions is a rare eight-week
opportunity to view the private art collection of American
philanthropists Julian and Josie Robertson.
The 'Julian and Josie Robertson Promised Gift' shows over 15 works by European masters of the modern period, including Gauguin, Dalí and Mondrian
"We've planned an exciting opening programme and extended our hours," said Gallery Director Chris Saines.
"It will undoubtedly take more than one visit to take in the new gallery."
A special visitor programme for the first and second weekends of opening includes talks, presentations, readings, fashion, music and cultural performances.
Entry to the gallery, its opening exhibitions and activities programme is free.
