A man has been arrested over the violent robbery of an elderly Christchurch woman.

Police have charged a 35-year-old man with aggravated robbery after the 86-year-old woman was attacked and robbed in the car park at Barrington Mall on the first of this month.

Patricia Burrows received a fractured pelvis, cuts to her head and numerous bruises.

Detective sergeant Ross Tarawhiti says she has been in hospital ever since, she told police she is relieved the man has now been apprehended.

He will appear in court on Wednesday morning
