A Northland man sparked a three-hour manhunt in the Kaipara area after threatening several members of the public with a rifle on Wednesday afternoon.

The armed offenders squad were called to Pouto, on the northern peninsula of the Kaipara Harbour, at around 5pm NZT after the man presented the rifle and made threats at several locals.

He surrendered to police in the Dargaville area at around 7.30pm.

The man, believed to be in his 30s, was known to police and is currently facing active charges. He is expected to be charged on Thursday with a raft of firearms offences.

Police Northern Communications spokesman Inspector Lou Alofa praised the actions of the armed offenders squad in apprehending the man and minimising the risk to public safety.
