The woman charged after giving birth on a Pacific Blue plane has been remanded in custody.
The 29-year-old Samoan national is charged with assaulting and abandoning the baby. She made no plea and has been granted interim name suppression.
The baby, who has now been named Grace, is in the care of Child Youth and Family after being found on the plane after the flight from Apia landed in Auckland.
Detective Inspector Mark Gutry says it's not clear when the woman went into labour and no one was aware of her being in labour before the flight.
Gutry says if the baby cried on the plane, no one heard it.
The mother and baby were initially taken to Middlemore Hospital and the mother had been receiving medical treatment before being released on Wednesday.
Police say the baby has not suffered significant injuries but they have evidence the infant was assaulted.
Gutry says the baby is well.
He says the woman has another child back home in Samoa.
