A former AUT staff member has appeared in court after half a million dollars went missing from the Auckland University of Technology.

Jonathan Kirkpatrick is facing seven charges including false accounting.

The 53-year-old resigned as chief executive of AUT's Business Innovation Centre last week. At the time, AUT spokeswoman Barbara Bilcich said the resignation was a result of an internal investigation.

His lawyer says Kirkpatrick takes full responsibility for his actions and wanted to enter pleas today.

However police asked for more time.

Kirkpatrick has been bailed and will enter pleas when he reappears on August 17.
