A 35-year-old man has been arrested after a man was found dead in the centre of Queenstown late on Thursday night.

Senior Sergeant John Fookes says police were called to a taxi stand in Camp St about 11.30pm following a report of a man lying unconscious there.

"In spite of attempts by police, members of the public and ambulance staff, the man could not be resuscitated and died at the scene," he says.

He has not yet been indentified.

The arrested man is due to appear in Queenstown District Court on Friday where he will face a charge of assault.

A portion of Camp St will remain closed for most of the day.
