Police are continuing their hunt for a prisoner on the run in Lower Hutt.
About 50 officers are searching suburbs around the Hutt Valley for Matthew George Kidman, who was due to appear in the Lower Hutt District Court today but escaped police custody at around 2.30pm.
Police have described Kidman as "desperate".
Hutt Valley Area Commander Inspector Mike Hill says Kidman fled by taxi to an address known to police, but by the time officers arrived there, he was on the run again.
Hill says police are now searching homes of Kidman's associates in an attempt to bring him back into custody.
He says Kidman is considered a danger to those who attempt to apprehend him.
Armed police have been involved in the search.
