Police are appealing for help to find the attacker of a Christchurch great grandmother who has been mugged while out getting milk.

It's another blow for 86-year-old Patricia Burrows who has been in and out of hospital fighting cancer.

She had popped out to get some milk at the shops in Barrington at 9pm Thursday and was attacked as she was getting back into her car.

Now she's in hospital, showing her injuries - a gash to the head, a broken pelvis and a graze to her elbow.

"This bugger, he just grabbed me all round my body and just picked me up and dumped me, dumped me as hard as he could," she says.

The offender ran off with her handbag, leaving her on the ground in the mall car park, calling for help.

It's just shattering, just shattering, totally shattering," says Burrows, crying.

Her daughter, Jenny Bourke, is outraged by the attack.

"I think what really gets me is that it's a handbag, a handbag. To endanger people's lives for the sake of a handbag, words fail me," she says.

The offender managed to escape the car park by jumping over a fence and running across Barrington Park.  Witnesses in a nearby car chased the man but lost him as he left the park.

He was last seen running into a small alleyway that leads into Sugden street.

Police are now asking neighbours to check their properties for any signs of the handbag and it's contents. The handbag is navy blue with a silver clasp.

Detective Sergeant Ross Tarawhiti of Christchurch police says the mugger could strike again.

"Obviously somebody must know this guy. He's a danger to everyone out there. He needs to be apprehended and please if you know anything, give me a ring," says Tarawhiti.

The 86-year-old also wants him caught.

"I just wish that he was put into a police cell with some guard dogs to have a go at him. I just think they're total ratbag mongrels," says Burrows.

It's been a bad year for her. She has had radiotherapy for cancer. Now she may never feel safe again.

"I'll be fearful of going out now and doing the shopping. I won't be doing the shopping at that hour of the night ever again," she says.

The offender is described as a male Maori of slim build and wearing a grey sweat top, blue coloured pants, possibly jeans, and white sneaker type shoes.

He is described as being aged between 20-30 years and has long black or brown shoulder length curly hair.
