A new DNA-based crime prevention programme has astounded authorities at its effectiveness after a trial in Manukau City revealed outstanding results.

Police say the NZ-first trial has seen burglaries in the Manurewa suburb of Randwick Park reduced by 61% after 1,000 homes, businesses and schools were provided with SelectaDNA Forensic Property Marking kits last September.

The product uses a virtually invisible synthetic DNA solution to mark personal property. Each batch of solution is unique in its DNA makeup and once registered on the secure database, proves irrefutable evidence of property ownership.

SelectaDNA NZ director David Morrissey says it is a comprehensive crime prevention strategy and works by deterring would-be thieves. He says each kit contains stickers that residents stick to their windows so everyone can see that the property is protected.

"Highly visible signage and word of mouth among the criminal fraternity is proving to be a very successful way to deter theft and burglary. They know that if they steal, they're marked," says Morrissey.

SelectaDNA trials have also worked well in the UK.

Inspector Jason Hewett says the first New Zealand trial, supported by Manukau City Council and Victim Support, has gone a long way to helping the Randwick Park community feel safer.

And while the trial didn't lead to any criminal convictions, backers say the product is a victim of its own success.

"It deters the would be offenders because would be offenders have the biggest fear of being caught," says Morrissey.

Manukau Mayor Len Brown says it drives a wedge into "the gang and drug stuff". "Burglaries are the lifeline of that type of activity," says Brown.
