Anti-rodeo activists are protesting against what they say is a "cruel display of man's dominance and abuse of animals" at the International Rodeo, held at Hamilton's Claudelands Arena this evening.
Animal rights organisation SAFE is leading the campaign, having protested at previous year's events in Christchurch.
The sold-out event kicks off at 7pm this evening, and features international bullriders and bronc handlers. It is the largest event of its kind in the country.
SAFE spokesperson Mandy Carter said that aside from the "usual torment" the animals involved are subjected to stress and anxiety that comes with pyrotechnic displays and loud music at the event.
"These animals are forced to endure needless suffering and gross mistreatment, all for the sake of so-called entertainment," said Carter.
SAFE said they asked the Hamilton Council not to host the rodeo at Claudelands, but the council responded that they were contracted to the event.
However, the council did say it would look at policy for future events involving animals.
