Animal rights groups do not want New Zealand to become a dumping ground for cat and dog fur.
Spokesman Hans Kriek says it is almost always mislabeled as faux fur or fake fur.
A campaign by a coalition of animal protection groups in New Zealand is being launched to ban the import of cat and dog fur into the country.
Kriek says many animals in the trade are skinned alive.
He says the US, Australia and European countries have already banned cat and dog fur and New Zealand could become a dumping ground if it does not follow suit.
