Prince Edward has arrived in New Zealand where his first stop was Christchurch's International Antarctic Centre.

Centre director Richard Benton says staff members are excited and have been busily preparing for the royal visitor some time.

The outing is the first of a three-day nationwide tour, where the Prince will present Duke of Edinburgh awards.

The Prince's New Zealand visit follows a controversial Australian one, where he suggested the risk of death is part of the attraction for the outdoor adventure award scheme.
