A review of animal welfare regulations is expected, after a controversial pig farm was cleared of animal cruelty accusations.
A Levin farmer had been accused of animal cruelty, after pictures were leaked showing pigs crammed into crates.
MAF says the farmer isn't breaching any compliance codes, and he's been given the all clear.
MAF investigations manager Greg Reid says they visited the farm late Tuesday alongside an independent vet and pig expert.
He says the pig farmer is breaking no laws, but says it's clear there's debate at the moment about whether pigs should be kept in stalls.
However Reid says he expects a thorough review of current codes and regulations will be carried out in light of the case.
He says MAF could've only taken action had specific animals been suffering unnecessarily, or if the pigs had diseases which hadn't been treated.
Meanwhile, Green MP Sue Kedgley is challenging the Minister of Agriculture to go and see the reality of pig farming.
Kedgley says she is organising to take a cross party group of MPs to visit some pig farms.
She's demanding Agriculture Minister David Carter do the same, saying he has a duty to know what's going on.
Kedgley is also calling on both Labour and National to come out and oppose the sow crate farming practice.
