Telecom's XT mobile network is finally up and running for some
customers but many are still experiencing problems after a major
crash which affected tens of thousands of customers.
It is the second major breakdown of the network in just over a
month.
On Wednesday ONE News received hundreds of emails from unhappy
customers.
All customers south of Taupo, including the South Island, could not call or text on their XT mobiles, the crash affecting tens of thousands of people.
Geoff Brown owns a security company, ABC Security, and has staff out on the road. The network disruption has cost him.
"(We've lost) in excess of $1,000 for today's little episode, just due to the fact we can't get hold of our techs, we can't get them to go to jobs that have come in and if they've got issues they can't ring us," says Brown.
Ernie Newman of the Telecommunications Users Association says he has had contact with a number of businesses who have a large number of XT phones.
"They have sale reps, they have truck drivers. They have all sorts of people out there on the road who all of a sudden, hey presto, are not in contact anymore."
It is not the first time Telecom's mobile network has failed. There was another major breakdown just over a month ago, affecting 90,000 customers.
"The last time it did go down it actually stuffed my phone," says one user.
This time, Telecom promised to have the network back up and running by 1.00pm.
But ONE News received hundreds of emails throughout the afternoon from frustrated customers claiming their XT mobiles were still not working.
Telecom is apologising for the failure but has yet to offer an explanation.
Telecom has made no metion yet of compensation but after the
breakdown in December
they offered free calls for one day and free weekend calling.
But the Telecommunications Users Association says compensation is not enough second time around, especially for business customers.
The association wants an assurance there will not be a recurrance of the breakdown.

I could not access urgent client files to meet deadline with client - recently with Telecom outage. I turned my PC on at 8 a.m. to access files and could not access until late into the afternoon. I don't expect Telecom to fork out for every little 'outage', but at what point is it deemed signficant enough for them to compensate? As it is, I rang them recently and they said, "A credit will be applied to your account". Two weeks later they told me they weren't??

people seem to blame every hiccup they have on 'the issue'. I suppose it is only natural but common now!

After saying I wanted a refund on three XT phones from our household and plans cancelled, I was told I could go into a Telecome shop and they would supply loan CDMA phones free of charge and swap plans and numbers over until XT becomes more stable. I would suggest everyone does this.
