A 21-year-old man will appear in court tomorrow after allegedly assaulting an Ironman athlete in a road rage attack near Taupo over the weekend.
The alleged incident occurred on Broadlands Road after the 49-year-old cyclist made a hand gesture at the driver of the ute who he thought drove too close to him.
The driver then reportedly pulled over, chased the cyclist and pushed him off his bike.
The cyclist was taken to hospital with serious pelvic injuries and a broken collar bone.
A Bay of Plenty police spokesperson said this morning the cyclist was in a stable condition.
The local Taupo man was arrested and charged with assault.
