Swimmers and dog owners are being asked to avoid a Wairarapa River containing dangerous toxic algae.

Blue-green algal mats have grown extensively over the past few weeks in the Waipoua River and are now starting to wash up onto the river's edge.

Greater Wellington environmental scientist, Summer Warr, says high risk warning signs have been posted in the area but people, especially those walking their dogs, should simply avoid the river.

Warr says if any person or animal does become sick after visiting the river they need to contact the doctor or vet immediately.
