The New Zealand Red Cross is alarmed at an international email asking for help for Haiti - purporting to be from the British Red Cross.

The email is a scam.

New Zealand Red Cross Chief Executive, John Ware says the email is headed with the distinctive Red Cross emblem. But the organisation has not authorised its use and has no knowledge of the organisation behind it.

Police have been told.

New Zealanders have so far donated more than $600,000 dollars to the genuine Red Cross Haitian Earthquake Appeal and its still accepting donations at its website, by cheque, at a number of banks and its branches throughout the country.
