One of New Zealand's biggest air gun retailers agrees that the
most high-powered weapons he sells should be restricted.
Last week John Skinner became the first New Zealander convicted of
murder using an air rifle following the murder of undercover police
officer Don Wilkinson.
Wilkinson was the first person in New Zealand to be killed with an air rifle but at the moment, anyone over 18 can buy the kind of weapon involved.
The Police Association has made it clear it wants restrictions introduced for the sale of the air guns.
Ron Young, who owns a range of air rifles, says the model used by Skinner to shoot Wilkinson was the FX Monsoon, a semi-automatic air rifle designed for shooting pests.
The rifle costs around $3000 and fires pellets at just under 300 metres a second. It is also very easy to fire with no recoil, barely any movement and the ability to fire 12 shots as fast as the trigger can be pulled.
Young agrees with the police that high-end air power warrant restrictions.
