Fifty Afghani taxi drivers have met and raised their concerns of widespread racism with National's Christchurch MP Nicky Wagner.

Their meeting follows the fatal stabbing of 39-year-old father of five Abdulrahman Ikhtiari last weekend.

Wagner says the drivers told her they are subjected to all sorts of abuse, especially at night, and are all worried for their safety.

Wagner is advising the drivers to strike up close relationships with police.

She says the drivers' claims of abuse and racism are concerning and she wants them to feel they can easily approach police.

Wagner is organising a meeting between drivers and police to outline to drivers what they can do to feel safer.

An appeal set up for the dead taxi driver's widow and children has so far raised more than $20,000.
