A 5.0 earthquake off the southern Hawke's Bay coast was felt as far away as Feilding.
The quake struck 60km south-east of Porangahau at 8.36pm last night and was recorded at a depth of 12km.
More than 70 people posted reports on the GeoNet website that they had felt the quake.
About 90 minutes later a 4.2 quake struck in the same location but at a depth of 20km.
There were only two reports posted of people feeling the second quake.
