The Christchurch CBD remains in lockdown but a fast paced design challenge has opened the door to ideas for future development.
More than 100 design professionals took part in a 48-hour challenge, which was organised by the Christchurch City Council.
Based at Lincoln University, the designers have been working around the clock on the two-day challenge, giving up a whole week of working-time, free of charge.
Entrants came from multiple disciplines ranging from landscape architects to urban design engineers.
Organiser Neil Challenger says no one discipline can solve Christchurch's big problem so it was important that a range of experts contributed.
"It's like a film after a nuclear disaster," Challenger told ONE News.
The council selected five key sites in the CBD and assigned three design teams to each of them, in an effort to gather ideas on how to rebuild the damaged central city.
One member from each team was taken into the Red Zone, so they could view their designated site and the issues that come with it.
The Christchurch City Council has been canvassing ideas for months, receiving more than 90,000 submissions from the public.
Ideas from both the public and professionals will become part of the new central city plan due on August 22.
The winning team from the design challenge will be announced
later this evening.
