Quake damage on Colombo Street - Source: Reuters
Many Cantabrians had a rude awakening this morning, with a 4.1 earthquake that struck just after 4am.
The quake had a depth of 5km, and was located 10km east of Christchurch according to GNS Science.
The quake was felt in Christchurch, as well as further north in Rangiora, Woodend and Waikuku.
Royal Commission to focus on store
Today the Canterbury Earthquakes Royal Commission will look at the collapse of the Great Opportunity Shop and Dairy in Christchurch.
The two-storey building on Colombo St, in the central city, collapsed during last year's February 22 earthquake, causing loss of life.
The Royal Commission will hear from the owner of the building, as well as structural engineers, the Christchurch City Council and an eyewitness.
This week the inquiry has heard that much of Colombo St should still have been cordoned off from the September 2010 quake when the February earthquake struck.
Many people were killed by the collapse of buildings on the street, including four pedestrians and 12 people travelling on a bus.
The Christchurch Memorial Service will be live on TV ONE and tvnz.co.nz from noon on Wednesday, February 22.
