A warning to anyone thinking about buying a house from friends and family. Do all the same checks and take the same legal precautions you would if you were buying off a stranger!
When Hamilton man Wayne got into financial difficulty his sister Connie and brother-in-law Todd bought his beloved house. Trouble was, the two parties had different ideas as to what the arrangement would be. Wayne thought they were helping him out, and that he would eventually buy the house back. But Connie and Todd wanted the house for themselves.
When Wayne refused to move out Connie and Todd had him evicted.
They have been estranged ever since.
But when Connie and Todd applied for consent to build a garage they got the shock of their lives to learn the house had never got a code compliance, and, worse, it has major structural issues that makes it structurally unsound - so unsafe they can't even let their toddler sleep in his room on his own.
They never got a LIM or a PIM when they bought the house, assuming if there was an issue they would already know.
They contacted My House, My Castle to track down Wayne and find out what he knew about these issues with the house.
