MIRANDA'S DREAM HOME
As part of our tenth birthday celebrations we drop in on an old friend from our first series. The Dream Home ran throughout series one as we followed Miranda Simpson and her quest to get all the problems with her architecturally designed dream home fixed. Last time we saw her we celebrated finally getting her code compliance and all the problems with her house finally fixed - a happy ending.
Or so we thought.
Ten years later, and we found Miranda's woes were far from over. Although she enjoyed a couple of trouble free years, the leaks returned, worse than ever. We didn't know it back in 1999 when we followed her story, but her house was one of the tens of thousands of New Zealand homes built in that era that turned out to be rotten. The term Leaky Building Syndrome had yet to be invented in 1999, but unfortunately, Miranda's home is one of them.
She has spent the last decade battling her way through the Weathertight Homes Resolution Service, while her marriage broke up, her son developed a mystery illness she attributes to living in the mouldy and toxic house, and Miranda herself got cancer - having half her tongue removed, something she also blames on the toxic house.
Now, to add insult to injury her case has been thrown out of the Weathertight Homes Tribunal on a legal technicality and her opponents legal costs awarded against her!
Shocked we track down some of the other Leaky home owners we
have featured on the series over the last ten years, and discover
similar tales of heartache.

instead, they got Extreme Makeover, the My House, My Castle
Cocksy and Hamish have just three days to tackle the most expensive room in any house...on a budget. The result is a super stylish kitchen with lots of space - as Toby says when he sees it: "its like we have got a whole new house, totally exceeded my expectations".
