Episode 3: Mere Edwards

For the past decade or so the Hastings suburb of Camberley has experienced high unemployment, high levels of crime and associated low morale amongst the community.

Several years ago Camberley resident Mere Edwards set about to change all that. She has worked through the local primary school setting up concerts, celebrating special occasions and helping the community to feel good about itself. The Heretaunga Caring Kiwi Trust was set up to help Mere achieve her dream, and she has been very successful.

But so much of her time is spent with the community that her garden is neglected.

Richard chose to give Mere a sanctuary. A shell path leads from her back door to a water feature area, which is enclosed by a punga wall with Maori carvings standing at each end of the path.

Richard chose colour for the garden - lavenders, azaleas, camellias, boronias, lemons and mandarin. Two outdoor seats were donated so Mere could sit quietly by her water feature in her sanctuary.
