Secret Garden, The
Francis Ford Coppola executive-produced this lush adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett's classic children's story directed by Agnieszka Holland (Europa, Europa).
Kate Maberly (who more recently appeared as Wendy in the production of Peter Pan within the film Finding Neverland) plays Mary Lennox, a young British girl raised in India who goes to live with her widowed uncle when her parents die. Left to her own devices in her Uncle's castle, Mary makes friends with her bedridden cousin and a servant's child, and together they explore the castle.
Soon they discover a neglected garden which they set about restoring, which has a flow on effect to their grim surroundings.
The Secret Garden is a perfect family film that shouldn't bore the littlies and offers fine, old school storytelling for the adults. It nostalgically evokes the style of British kidult TV dramas produced a lot during the late 70s and 80s.
