Christmas Day at 10.15pm
Cast: Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, Whoopi Goldberg, Tony Goldwyn.
Director: Jerry Zucker.
Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg star in this super smash hit, one of the soppiest, and awesomest, fantasy romances of all time.
Swayze and Moore play devoted couple Sam and Molly, whose blissful existence is blown apart when Sam is killed in a seemingly random mugging. But Sam apparently has unfinished business as his spirit doesn't depart this earth.
Confused about his incorporeal status, Sam gets instruction on how to affect the physical world thanks to a grumpy ghost he meets in the subway (played by Vincent Schiavelli, one of the most ubiquitous character actors ever).
When Sam begins to suspect his death may have been premeditated, he sets about investigating with the help of a psychic named Oda Mae Brown (Goldberg, in an Oscar-winning role), who until Sam started talking to her, thought she was phoney. It is then up to Oda Mae, with Sam's help, to protect Molly from the forces that lead to Sam's death.
While most people remember Ghost for its steamy pottering wheel scene (which received a lot of attention at the time of the film's release), Ghost is a resiliently watchable film which offers solid popcorn joy, and a bit of tear for the more emotional among you.
It made an astounding $507 million at the worldwide box office.
Surprisingly, Ghost's director Jerry Zucker is part of the ZAZ
team made up of David Zucker (Jerry's brother), Jim Abrahams and
himself, who together directed the classic spoof films Flying High
and Top Secret. When Naked Gun 2 1/2 was released following
Ghost's massive success, the tagline read "From the brother of the
director of Ghost".
Trivia: Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, Kevin Bacon, Bruce Willis, Harrison Ford, Paul Hogan and Alec Baldwin all turned down the role of Sam, which eventually went to Patrick Swayze.
