David Duchovny (The X-Files) and Seann William Scott (The Dukes of Hazzard) star in this big budget sci-fi comedy from the director of Ghostbusters.
Director Ivan Reitman was clearly trying to repeat the tone (and success) of his earlier hit Ghostbusters with this watchable, special effects-laden film about a two college professors (Duchovny, Orlando Jones), a government scientist (Julianne Moore) and a pool guy (Sean William Scott - American Pie's Stifler) taking on a bunch of swiftly-evolving creatures in a small town.
Bizarrely, the script did the rounds in Hollywood as a serious sci-fi thriller for years before Reitman got a hold of it and everyone decided to make it a comedy.
This comes through somewhat in the finished product in that its tone seems to waver and never really settle. Scenes of Moore pratfalling about the place a followed quickly by big ravenous creatures eating people. But it's never boring, and features some imaginative creatures.
They've also managed to work the then (2001) current obsession with toilet humour, and the climax of the film is arguably cinema's biggest ever butt joke. All good though.
Ghostbuster Dan Ackroyd has a small role.
