Ford driver Mark Winterbottom and Holden's Garth Tander get their chance to claw back points on runaway V8 Supercar championship leader Jamie Whincup after grabbing the front row of the grid for the opening race at Winton Raceway on Saturday.
Winterbottom took pole position during the top 10 shootout - his one minute 23.0956 second lap edging out Tander by six-hundredths of a second.
Whincup was pushed into fourth place by Team Vodafone teammate Craig Lowndes, who will start from third on the grid after setting the third fastest time.
All three of Whincup's rivals will hope to finish ahead of him in the first of two races this weekend, which starts at 1535 (AEST) in order to reduce the Ford driver's commanding series points lead.
Defending series champion Whincup has won all four races this season.
The big surprise in qualifying was Holden driver Will Davison struggling badly to finish 22nd fastest and set himself a difficult task for the opening race.
Davison has so far enjoyed a dream start to life as Mark Skaife's Holden Racing Team replacement and sits third in the championship.
