Series leader Jamie Whincup will start from pole position in Sunday's V8 Supercar race in Perth as he attempts to wrap up back-to-back championships.

Ford driver Whincup followed on from his race win on Saturday to clock the fastest time at Barbagallo Raceway during Sunday morning qualifying.

His nearest championship rival Will Davison qualified fourth fastest.

Whincup leads Holden Racing Team's Davison by 161 points going into Sunday's 84-lap race.

With just three races left in the V8 season, a good result for Whincup and a poor one for Davison could see the Team Vodafone driver seal the championship.

Ford driver Mark Winterbottom will start second on the grid on Sunday, with Holden's Garth Tander third fastest in qualifying.
