Jarno Trulli put Toyota out in front in final practice for the team's home Japanese Grand Prix on Saturday.
The Italian popped in a quick lap of one minute 31.709 seconds right at the end of the session to knock Toro Rosso's Swiss rookie Sebastien Buemi, the unexpected pace setter, off the top.
Germany's Nico Rosberg was third quickest for Williams, with the Suzuka track bathed in bright sunshine after steady rain washed out much of Friday's practice.
Brawn's championship leader Jenson Button was ninth quickest but needed to pit for a new front wing after banging wheels with Toro Rosso's Spanish rookie Jaime Alguersuari early in the session.
Button can win the title in Japan on Sunday if the Briton scores five points more than Brazilian team mate Rubens Barrichello.
Qualifying follows later.
