Holden driver Garth Tander has won his third pole position of the V8 Supercar season for Sunday's second 72-lap race at the Townsville 400 event.

Third in Saturday's first race, Tander clocked the fastest lap of the 2.87km street circuit with a one minute 12.470 second lap to finish ahead of teammate Will Davison for an all Holden Racing Team front row.

"I'm really happy with that," Tander said.

"It's great to get pole today and we're in for a show later on."

Winner of Saturday's race, Ford's Jamie Whincup, will line up third on the grid alongside James Courtney.

Ford's Mark Winterbottom finished fifth in a much-improved qualifying display from his 16th place start for Saturday's race.

Joining him on the third row for Sunday's race will be Holden's Michael Caruso.

Saturday's pole winner Lee Holdsworth couldn't match his performance on Sunday and will start the race in 13th position.

Several big names will also be at the back of the grid for the race with Holden's Todd Kelly (20th), New Zealander Greg Murphy (23rd) and Ford's Steven Richards (24th) all struggling to make an impact in the 20-minute session.
