Spaniard Dani Sordo dominated the first day of the Rally of Spain ahead of world champion Sebastien Loeb and the man gunning for his crown, championship leader Mikko Hirvonen on Saturday.
Sordo won the first four stages in dry and clear conditions but his Citroen team-mate Loeb improved as the day progressed to win the last two, cutting Sordo's lead back to just 1.6 seconds.
"I'm happy because we are still very close to first place but the main thing is that it's not Mikko who's first," Loeb was quoted as saying on the World Rally Championship website.
Hirvonen was a distant third, 32.6 seconds behind Loeb.
"I wasn't 100 percent happy in the morning and although things were better this afternoon, we're not there yet," the Finn said.
"I really want to get second place here, though. If I could do that this weekend, another second in Britain would be enough for the title."
Hirvonen needs to finish only second in Spain and Britain to take the title even if Loeb wins both races.
