Ford driver Mikko Hirvonen maintained his lead on the second day of the Rally of Poland on Sunday (NZT)

The Finn was 12 seconds ahead of compatriot Jari-Matti Latvala, also in a Ford.

"I was going flat out all the time, the stages were very fast," said Hirvonen, who had started the day with an advantage of 8.9 seconds over the field.

"This afternoon has been insane ... you just go flat out."

Latvala also said he had the feeling he was "driving like crazy".

Citroen's Spanish driver Dani Sordo was in third place, 38.5 seconds behind the leader.

"There are five stages ahead of us (on Monday) and Sordo is still pushing hard so we cannot back off at all," said Latvala.

France's Sebastien Ogier was fourth followed by Norwegian brothers Petter and Henning Solberg in fifth and sixth.

World champion Sebastien Loeb was down in 13th place.

The Frenchman crashed into a tree stump and broke his wheel on Saturday, forcing him to retire from a race for the third time in a row.

Loeb leads Hirvonen by seven points in the world championship standings.
