Scott Dixon is wary of the former Champ Car teams heading into the season-opening race of the Indy Car championship in St Petersburg, Florida on Monday morning.

The Champ Car series merged with Indy Car just weeks before the start of last season to become the Indy Car Series.

Dixon says he is expecting all of those teams to be much improved this year.

The New Zealander has qualified eighth on the grid whicch starts at 6.45am New Zealand time.

2008 runner-up Helio Castroneves isn't competing for Team Penske in the first few events of the season as he's defending himself against US tax evasion charges.

Dixon says Team Penske will still be a major threat with Australia's Ryan Briscoe qualifying fourth fastest.
