Kiwi Indy Car driver Scott Dixon has finished sixth in the season-opening race of the Indy Car championship in Sao Paulo on Monday.

It was a topsy-turvy race for the 2008 champion, who crashed on the opening lap before fighting back to second at one stage.

Australian Will Power won the race ahead of American Ryan Hunter-Reay and Brazilian Vitor Meira.

Power overtook Hunter-Reay on the penultimate lap to chalk up the first win of 2010.

Vitor Meira finished third.

There were several incidents throughout the race and a major thunderstorm suspended it for several minutes.
