Hamilton driver Kayne Scott found reward for his consistency in the third round of the NZV8 motor racing championship at Ruapuna in Christchurch on Sunday.
Scott found himself atop the series standings after posting three successive second placings in his Ford.
The three races produced three different winners, with the opening race yesterday won by Aucklander Angus Fogg, the second race today going to defending champion John McIntyre, of Nelson, and the third to Gold Coast-based Craig Baird.
Baird had an astonishing run in the reverse grid race, coming from 24th to secure his first win in the championship.
Scott's second placing behind Baird, one spot ahead of Scott, also saw him assume the championship lead from McIntyre.
He now has 533 points to McIntyre's 529, with Auckland's Andy Booth third on 416.
"Our car is stronger under brakes than John McIntyre's here and we had more pace than him in the last race," Scott said.
"We have had a great car here for the last three years, John's had a good car at Timaru where we race next and last year when we went to Manfeild, Angus Fogg blew us all away.
"So you do find that the cars are different at different circuits and we've got plenty of work we want to do on the car Ford before the next round."
The next round in Timaru is on January 9-11.
McIntyre was happy to have the points earned from a fifth, a third and a win.
"We salvaged something out of nothing really," the two-time defending champion said.
"We didn't have the car speed here after demonstrating good speed at Taupo and Pukekohe, but I'm very happy to have the points."
