Brazilian front-runner Helio Castroneves enjoyed the fastest lap on Saturday (NZT) in the final practice session before Monday's (NZT) Indy 500.
Two-time Indy winner, Castroneves, circled the iconic Brickyard in 40.1923 seconds for a lap of 358.272 km/h.
"If I could win this race it would be my biggest victory," Castroneves, who was recently acquitted of tax evasion, said.
The Brazilian's fastest lap came on his third of 39 circuits and his sixth lap at 40.3116 seconds was the third-best of the final one-hour session to prepare for Monday's green flag.
Australian Will Power, who will start on the outside of the third row in the 33-car field, was second-best in the session, turning a lap in 40.2577 seconds at 357.696 km/h.
Brazil's Mario Moraes was third on the day's speed chart followed in order by England's Dan Wheldon, Aussie front row starter Ryan Briscoe, Dario Franchitti of Scotland and defending Indy 500 champion Scott Dixon.
American Danica Patrick was 23rd on the practice speed chart but the fastest of three women in the session who will start on Monday.
