Formula One championship leader Jenson Button will start Sunday's potentially title-deciding Japanese Grand Prix in 10th place with his leading rival Rubens Barrichello sixth.
Button needs to score five points more than his Brawn team mate if he is to wrap up the championship with two races to spare.
After a chaotic qualifying, with the session halted three times by crashes and seven of the 20 drivers collecting five place penalties, the governing FIA finally published a provisional starting grid a day later.
In a bizarre twist, Brazilian Barrichello was listed in sixth place despite having qualified fifth on Saturday before being handed a five place penalty for speeding while yellow warning flags were being waved.
He dropped only one place because of the timing of the other drivers' penalties.
Button, who had qualified seventh, was demoted three places.
Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel starts on pole position, alongside Toyota's Jarno Trulli.
