Formula One title contender Rubens Barrichello will drop five places on the Singapore Grand Prix starting grid after engineers were forced to change the gearbox in his Brawn.

With three races to go after this one, Barrichello trails team-mate Jenson Button by 14 points.

Barrichello's gearbox was replaced after the third free practice session, a statement from the governing body's technical delegate Jo Bauer said.

The penalty was imposed because Barrichello had not used the replaced gearbox for four consecutive events as required under the sport's regulations.

Race stewards also investigated "an incident" between Barrichello and Renault's Romain Grosjean during the final practice session but, after hearing from both drivers, took no further action.
