How to take the sting out of buying summer gear

"It's always difficult to accommodate the demands of my family. The kids want new gear for the beach, we need a new barbecue... This year, I think I'll wait until just after Christmas to get the sale items."  Marina, Account Executive

From beach umbrellas, to tents, to surf boards, it's easy to become tempted to buy new summer gear. Often there are plenty of promotions in the lead-up to summer - some are too good to refuse.

Westpac's hot tips for spending on summer gear:

  • Remember your budgeting basics: "I want a barbeque, but do I need it?" Give yourself a few days to think about it - if you still think you need it, then look at your options and decide the best way to purchase it
  • For big ticket items, shop around beforehand. You may find you get a better deal if you take the time to do your homework
  • Keep an eye out for sales
  • Managing your cash flow over summer can be tricky, especially if you're not receiving your regular income. A Westpac credit card could help - you'll get up to 55 days interest free credit each month.
With some Westpac credit cards you earn hotpoints® - rewarding you for your everyday spending. You also get extended warranty and purchase protection insurance with a Westpac Gold Credit Card, helping to protect your purchases*.
  • If you're worried about overspending, a Westpac Debitplus card (link: cards page) will only allow you to spend what's in your account. You'll be in control and avoid debt.
  • Are you interested in buying a big ticket item? A Westpac Personal Loan could work for you. You'll have the advantage of being a cash buyer and you'll also have a fixed repayment timeframe.
  • Be wary of store cards/hire purchase/'interest-free' deals: these can be great if you pay them off within the interest free term, but you may pay more in the long term if you don't. Some store cards may give you access to additional credit you didn't ask for. Ask yourself the question - can I afford the repayments?
