SUPREME AWARD WINNER
The winner of the Nga Toa Whakihuwaka Supreme Award is Tamati Kruger (Ngai Tuhoe).
In a surprise and emotional presentation at his marae in Ruatoki, our presenters Miriama Kamo and Scotty Morrision paid tribute to Tuhoe’s chief negotiator, a man who saw the Treaty settlements to their conclusion in 2013 and continues to work behind the scenes in helping Tuhoe as they continue toward a future of self-determination.
LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
This year’s Lifetime Achievement Award has been given to Dame Iritana Tawhiwhirangi (Ngati Porou).
The Nga Toa Whakaihuwaka judges felt she was an inspiration for female leaders and public servants; she was also recognised as a trailblazer in the renaissance of te reo Maori which has created new generations of Maori speakers.
A leader of the Kohanga Reo movement she has championed both early childhood immersion learning and Maori self-development.
