Chong Nee - Just getting by on love
"I just want to give it back to anyone everyone that has ever
loved me." John Chong-Nee.
John Chong-Nee has production credits over the years with artists such as Che Fu, Dei Hamo (with whom he co-wrote NZ's biggest selling single of 2004 'We Gon Ride'), Dave Dobbyn, AKA Brown, Deceptikonz to name a few. Chong-Nee has produced so many #1 hits for other people, it's only a natural progression for him to step out with his next level of NZ produced hip hop and soul influenced R'n'B.
One of New Zealand's most in demand R'n'B, Hip Hop and Soul producer and widely regarded as one of the best musicians in the country.
Multi-instrumentalist Chong-Nee, of Chinese/Maori/Samoan descent hailing from South Auckland, has finally taken the steps to produce his own much anticipated solo album dropping in the second week of May.
Chong Nee's album "Just Getting By On Love" was produced at Kog Studio and set up Handmade Records Label with Kog's Chris Chetland.
The quality of album hails back to the style of Al Green, putting all the tracks to tape. This results in a smooth lush sound that digital cannot offer. The album includes the unique sound of live tracks "More than you know" and "You've got my heart". These tracks feature legendary musicians such as Martin Winch and Leyton Greening and members of the Auckland Phil Harmonic Orchesra.
Also featuring in the album are a host of local talent including: Dei Hamo, PNC, Usouljah, Jigsaw, Lemuel and Kebraska.
Chong-Nee's singles: 'Thin Line' rocketed up the Medianstrip NZ charts thanks to inclusion on the Indie hit disk and received a significant airplay grant to become a huge club hit. 'Scenarios' was released to radio 2005 backed up by a stunning Martha Jefferies directed music video set in South Auckland. 'Black Widow' is dropping this week and being played as number one on the 'Hit Disk' going to all the radio stations nationwide. A music video is also screening for this song in May.
In final stages of production is a documentary by Michael Carpenter on the "Just Getting By On Love" album process, screening on C4 in May, backing up the nationwide release followed with a nationwide tour beginning in June.
With support performances such for R'n'B legends "Boys II Men" in 2005 and national performances such as for Orientation 2006, showcasing his signed talent, Chong-Nee is expected to keep influencing and supporting New Zealand music, pioneering New Zealand R'n'B to a new level of production with the Handmade Music team.
Chong-Nee is so influential in the New Zealand music scenes as well as much international interest. His story is inspirational and has a unique pacific flavour due to his ethnicity and his experiences within the New Zealand music industry and his own personal trials.
