Team Origin has been forced to pull out of their Louis Vuitton Pacific Series race against BMW Oracle on day two of the second round robin.
The British crew were in control of the gold fleet race but could not raise their head sail at the bottom of the second leg.
The gear problems meant that they had to withdraw and hand the victory to BMW Oracle.
Earlier both team were penalised for a collision with BMW Oracle's for hard contact as they were judged to not do everything they could to avoid a collision and thus were deducted a point.
The Team New Zealand boats have been sent back to base for the head foil repairs.
It is expected that it will take several hours to repair the boats and they will not be able to be used for the Team New Zealand versus Luna Rossa race later on Friday aftermoon.
Instead the teams will use the two BMW Oracle boats.
Both teams initially protested their penalties but BMW Oracle withdrew before it went to a jury hearing and therefore still have no points from this race.
TeamOrigin lost their protest and thus their penalty - minus half a point for the collision - will stand.
Event organiser Bruno Trouble said the decision "was a bit tough on the teams but we had to do that to protect the boats."
The Team New Zealand boats are expected to be repaired overnight and back in action for the gold fleet races on Saturday.
