Stephen Hall: 'Mule the former SAS Soldier'

Playing hardened SAS war veteran Mule was easy for veteran actor Stephen Hall - even though they're pretty much polar opposites.

"Mule is quite homophobic, sexist, and very stuck in his ways, very black and white. I'm none of those things. But I enjoyed the character because he got away with outrageous behaviour and comments."

Stephen admits his scariest moment on the show was Sam nearly catching him out part-way through. "We'd just finished a challenge involving diving into the pool and Sam said to me 'Mule, you'd have your PADI wouldn't you?' I just looked at him and said, 'Yeah' and changed the subject. Evidently it's the international dive certificate, but it could have been a small Irish tea-cake for all I knew!"

Off-screen, Stephen's passions include tennis ("I was South Auckland champ when I was 16, and won the Lynfield College seniors the year Chris Lewis won the juniors."), golf, fishing, reading, and surfing. "But I don't dive, although some of my friends would tell you I've added diving as a new dimension to my surfing!"

He's also a trained chef who can boast time at the luxurious Dorchester in London.
