Job title: Drainlayer - Apprentice

Entry Requirements:

An unregistered drainlayer i.e. an apprentice drainlayer or a person working in a labouring capacity, must hold a Limited Certificate in Drainlaying from the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board. The Limited Certificate must be renewed annually.

Training costs:

The National Certificate in Drainlaying costs $2500.00 takes two years to complete and involves both on and off-job training.

An apprentice drainlayer will work towards achieving the National Certificate in Drainlaying offered by the Plumbing Gasfitting Drainlaying and Roofing ITO (PGDRITO).

Location of job:

In the main you will be working outdoors and can be anywhere from building sites to farms as well as businesses, private homes, roads, and parks. So you'll have to cope with the heat in summer and the cold in winter. Conditions may be dirty, messy or smelly and you may be required to work in confined spaces, such as pipes.

Career path:

Only registered drainlayers can oversee and sign off on drainlaying work.

To become a registered drainlayer you must:
- complete an apprenticeship and gain the National Certificate in Drainlaying
- pass the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board registration exam.

Registered drainlayers must also renew their drainlayer's licence yearly with the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board.

Salary range:

Salaries vary. Registered drainlayers could earn between $45,000 and $65,000, depending on the company they work for and the region. Those running their own businesses may earn between $80,000 and $100,000.

Drainlayers can move into design, consultancy or teaching work in the industry. Many set up their own business.
