Job description
Investigate and evaluate civil construction and land development sites consult with private clients, government agencies, contractors and other professionals plan and design roads, earthworks and utilities work within the guidelines of the client and local authority get plans approved by the client and relevant authorities prepare cost estimates and contract documents for the work tender out the contract and select contractors to do the work manage and monitor construction to ensure the project is built according to the contract and plans ensure construction standards are met manage assets within budget attend construction site meetings with the contractor and client undertake site investigations for civil projects.

Qualifications required
A National Diploma of Civil Engineering (Applied) is offered by InfraTrain New Zealand (the infrastructure industry training organisation)
A Consortium of Polytechnics Diploma in Engineering (Civil) needs to be completed first.
NCEA English, Maths with Calculus, Physics and Chemistry is recommended.

Training costs
Between $4,000 to $6,000 per year full time study.
Scholarships may be offered by some of the larger companies.

Location of job
Work is both indoors and outdoors. There are job opportunities throughout New Zealand.

Career path
1. Diploma in Engineering (Civil) Consortium of Polytechnics (2 to 2.5 years full time study)
2. National Diploma in Civil Engineering (Applied) (2 to 2.5 years practical application) (Technical Engineer)
3. Professional Civil Engineer (Bachelor of Engineering degree)

Salary range
Salaries vary, but engineer technicians usually earn between $35,000 and $100,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications.
Engineer technicians can become self-employed, work as a contractor or progress to be a partner in an engineering firm.
